McKinley Students and Staff visit U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum

April 10, 2017

On Wednesday, April 4 a group of students and staff from McKinley Area Learning Center visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.  The McKinley participants joined students and staff from St. Cloud State University as well as several community members from the St. Cloud area on the one day trip.  The group was led by Dr. Dan Wildeson, Director of the SCSU Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education (CHGE), and professor of communication studies.  The trip was funded by a grant secured by Dr. Wildeson and funding from the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) and Tolerance Minnesota.

Leading up the trip, students participated in a course on Holocaust studies and will continue to deepen their understanding of the event by writing and reflecting upon their experiences.  Margo Kanthak, a graduate student in the SCSU English department and long-time colleague at CHGE, is facilitating class discussions and assisting students with pre- and post-trip responses.

While in Washington D.C., students and staff were also able to go on a self-guided tour of the city, which included stops at the White House, Washington Monument, World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial.  It was truly a day of deep, meaningful learning for all involved. View the slideshow.
