Important Superintendent Message to Class of 2020
Dear Class of 2020 and Families,
Last week, we shared plans for how we would celebrate our Class of 2020. We developed these plans based on the hopes and dreams shared with us by our seniors and their families and the COVID-19 public safety recommendations from the CDC and Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).
On Friday, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) released guidance on the types of graduation celebrations school districts are and are not allowed to do. Our plan to award diplomas individually to seniors in front of their immediate family through a socially distanced, no-contact process was not included in their guidance. We sought clarification from MDE and MDH and were informed today that they will not permit this type of celebration to take place.
On behalf of each of you, Class of 2020 and families, we are profoundly disappointed. We appreciate the time and input given by our students, families, and senior planning committees to create these plans.
We will not let this disappointing news take away the excitement and pride we feel in our Class of 2020. Your accomplishments are far too great. Fortunately, we have several other celebrations and recognitions planned to honor you. The schedule for these events follows:
May 28: Tech
All day: Electronic tribute to Class of 2020 on billboards at 33rd & Division and on Division by Crossroads Mall
5:00 - 6:30: Vehicle parade on Tech campus to wave farewell to staff
7:30: Graduation ceremony streamed on Channel 179, District and Tech websites
May 29: Apollo
All day: Electronic tribute to Class of 2020 on billboards at 33rd & Division and on Division by Crossroads mall
5:00 - 6:30: Vehicle parade on Apollo campus to wave farewell to staff
7:30: Graduation ceremony streamed on Channel 179, District and Apollo websites
Additionally, we have reserved the River's Edge Convention center for July 16 (Tech) and 17 (Apollo) to bring our seniors and families together again if health and safety guidelines permit.
We will plan to mail diplomas to our seniors in June once final grades have been recorded.
Our hearts go out to you, Class of 2020 and families. Although this decision is not what any of us hoped for, we remain committed to celebrating you in every way possible.
