South AVID (Advanced Via Individual Determination) students celebrated with their "Bigs" at St. Cloud State University to wrap the end of a successful year of mentorship.
Bigs on Campus was an idea created by Big Brothers Big Sisters, who approached the late Dr. Potter, former president of St. Cloud State University. Their combined vision was to create a community engagement program through the university that mentored St. Cloud community youth.
In partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, a program near and dear to Potter's heart, and District 742, AVID students were chosen to participate in a year-long mentor program with faculty at St. Cloud State University. The idea was to expose students to a college campus, particularly students who may not have considered college in their future.
"Professionals mentor youth that are in the junior high level," says Beth Knutson-Kolodzne, program coordinator and associate director of campus involvement at St. Cloud State University. "It's just been a fabulous program. Obviously, the students, just as much as the mentors, get a great deal out of it. They learn from one another."
With the program being such a success in its second year, it is projected to double in participants for the 2018-19 school year.
