Teacher Appreciation Week
Most of us have attended one function or another in our professional lives where the audience has been asked to share the name of the one person who made a difference in their lives. Hands down, (all right, maybe second after Mother) the answer is invariably a teacher.
This Teacher Appreciation Week, I ask you to think about a teacher who touched your life. What is it that makes him/her so memorable? If you are a parent, think about that question in reference to your child. What teacher has made an impact? Why is this relationship so important?
I shared with you last year that my teacher influence was Fergie. She taught me to strive for excellence by expecting the best from me and never lowering her standards.
I’m sure that there is plenty of research to document the power and magic of the teacher-student relationship. But what really matters is that relationship exists; that students know and can count on their teachers connecting with them in genuine and meaningful ways. It is students knowing that teachers believe in their ability to achieve. And it is that belief that transcends the years and follows students into their adult lives.
We are fortunate in this district to be surrounded by teachers who care and connect. I’ve seen them at work in their classrooms and in the hallways and on the playing fields and in the auditoriums. I know you have seen them, too, and know their value to our students and schools.
Let’s all take the opportunity this week to say THANK YOU in any way we can to District 742 teachers. They certainly deserve it.
