Two years ago, Tech received a Network for School Improvement grant which is facilitated by BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) and funded by the Gates Foundation. Tech uses the money for continuous school improvement efforts, which includes but is not limited to BARR training and expansion. This summer, 12 Tech teachers, interested in data informed practices and equity emphasis, attended the inagural summer institute.

The institute provided opportunities to explore strategies and research aimed the achievement of a goal to increase the graduation rate for students at Tech High School.

The institute was facilitated by the Tech Admin Team. District and building level experts provided content and strategies from the following areas:
-meeting the needs of diverse students (Ellen Stewart, director of equity services)
-use of data to inform instruction (Dr. Sylvia Huff, executive director of research, assessments and enrollment)
-research based instructional practices (Jayne Greeny, coordinator, learning and teaching)
-BARR I Time strategies (Mikey Lucia, BARR coordinator and Jeni Schad, 9th grade counselor)
-how to use data to inform instruction and creating a supportive space to discuss students (Cindi Patten, assistant principal)

The summer institute culminated in visits to three local community partners: Too Much Talent, Promise Neighborhood and the COP House.
