     6th Grade Orchestra
    Orchestra students need the text "String Basics: Book 1."  It is available  at Eckroth Music and Johnsons' Violins.  Beginning Orchestra meets every other day on a rotation schedule with Phy. Ed.  
     
    In the first year of study, students learn proper posture, care of the instrument, correct left and right hand position, simple rhythm patterns and songs in the key of D major.  
     
    There are two concerts, one in December and one in May, where students perform the songs they have learned for family and friends.  
     
     
     7th Grade Orchestra
     Orchestra students need the text "String Basics: Book 1."  It is available  at Eckroth Music and Johnsons' Violins.  Student's have orchestra every other day, alternating with Phy. Ed. 
     
     In the second year of study, proper posture, instrument care, correct left and right hand position, simple rhythm patterns and the key of D major are reinforced.  New material includes G and C major, articulations (staccato, spiccato, legato, accents, slurs), more complex rhythm patterns and more complicated repertoire including multi-part playing.  Music vocabulary is introduced and reinforced throughout the school year. 
     
    There are two concerts, one in December and one in May where students perform the music they have learned for family and friends.
     
    8th Grade Orchestra
    Orchestra students need the text "String Basics: Book 2."  It is available at Eckroth Music and Johnsons' Violins.  Students have orchestra every other day, alternating with Phy. Ed.
     
    In the third year of study, proper posture, instrument care, correct left and right hand position, quarter and eighth note rhythms, and the keys of D, G and C major are reinforced.  New material includes flat key signatures, high 3's/extensions, minor key signatures, sixteenth note rhythm patterns,  and more complicated repertoire including independent parts.  Music vocabulary is introduced and reinforced throughout the school year.

    9th Grade Orchestra
    Orchestra students need the text "String Basics: Book 3."  It is available at Eckroth Music and Johnsons' Violins.  Students have orchestra every day.
     
    In the 4th year of study, proper posture, instrument care, correct left and right hand position, quarter and eighth note rhythms and the keys of D, G and C major should be secure.  Students will continue to master and develop flat key signatures, high 3's/extensions, minor key signatures, and sixteenth note rhythm patterns.  An emphasis will be placed on more complicated repertoire that requires independent part playing.  Music vocaublary is introduced and reinforced throughout the school year.
     
    There are three concerts, one in December, one in February and one in May where students perform the music they have learned for family and friends.  Students are also invited to participate in Solo/Ensemble festival where the music they have prepared is critiqued by a judge.  The entire orchestra participated in large group festival in April where the music the group has prepared is critiqued by a judge.
     
    Addtionally, students may participated in extra-curricular music activities such as Chamber Orchestra (audition only), the spring musical, Chanhassan Dinner Theatre ($), and Music Listening Contest.
     
    10th-12th Grade Orchestra
    Orchestra students will use a wide variety of music texts that will be provided by the school.  Students have orchestra every day.
     
    In the 5th-7th years of study, students will primarily work on artistic expression through performance repertoire.  Technical skills will be developed through the use of a variety of texts as the need arises through performance repertoire.  Students will play complicated repertoire with a high level of musical maturity.
     
    There are three concerts, one in December, one in March and one in May where students will perform the music they have learned for family and friends.  All students will prepare for Solo/Ensemble festival but students will choose if they wish to participate in the festival day where the music they prepare is critiqued by a judge.  
     
    Additionally, students may particpate in extra-curricular music activities such as Chamber Orchestra (audition only), the spring musical, Chanhassan Dinner Theatre ($), and Music Listening Contest.
