Generative AI

Generative AI is a branch of artificial intelligence that creates entirely new content, like text, images, music, or even code. It learns patterns from existing data, then uses those patterns to produce new, original content. This opens doors for creative exploration, product design, and even scientific discovery, all powered by AI's unique ability to process and create.

Understanding generative AI is crucial for organizations like District 742 because:

  • It helps educators harness its potential for personalized learning, engaging activities, and administrative efficiency.
  • It empowers responsible use by students and staff, mitigating risks like plagiarism, misinformation, and overreliance on AI outputs.
  • It prepares students for the future by teaching them about this transformative technology and its impact on various fields.

This resource provides guidance for our students and staff on the appropriate and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI tools, in classroom instruction, school management, and systemwide operations.

Looking to our students’ future, here are two important considerations regarding AI and education today:

  1. The World Economic Forum's "Future of Jobs Report 2023" indicates that 75% of surveyed companies plan to implement generative AI by 2027.
  2. The International Monetary Fund released a report that states that AI will impact nearly 40% of jobs around the world.

While generative AI represents a powerful tool to personalize learning, this new resource also has the potential to create a growing divide if not used equitably.  The choices we make regarding generative AI in classrooms will either equip our students with the tools they need to thrive in an AI-driven future or leave them unprepared for the challenges ahead.
